United Airlines pilots on Monday voted to accept a deal with management to avert an immediate furlough of 2,850 aviators even as a $25 billion aid package given to U.S. airlines as Covid-19 relief nears its September 30 expiration date. The letter of agreement (LOA) prevents the furlough of any of United’s 13,000 pilots until June 2021.

Avianca on Friday said it would resume international flights starting September 28, some ten days after Colombia’s transport ministry announced plans to lift the country’s international travel ban imposed in March. The airline plans to launch service to 16 destinations, the first of which would connect Medellin with Miami and New York on Monday. Further service from Bogota will start on October 1, connecting Colombia’s capital city with Guayaquil and Quito, Ecuador, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Miami, and New York. Plans call for another service to start to another 10 cities on October 15.

Raytheon Technologies is eliminating 15,000 positions across its commercial aerospace and corporate organizations, including at Pratt & Whitney and Collins Aerospace, to strengthen the company as it navigates through the Covid-19 pandemic, Raytheon Technologies CEO Greg Hayes told investors recently. The tally is nearly double the original estimate the company had detailed in July.

Asian Sky Group (ASG) painted a mixed outlook for the industry in the Asia-Pacific region with purchase intentions ticking up and operations recovering, but still down year-over-year. In its third-quarter 2020 edition of Asian Sky Quarterly released today, ASG reported that business aircraft utilization in the region is now down just 9 percent from a year ago, a vast improvement from the plunge in April.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Tuesday called for universal Covid testing for international passengers and for governments to end quarantine measures. During a conference call with media, IATA director general Alexandre de Juniac said that quarantine requirements “are killing” airline efforts to recover from the pandemic and that testing all passengers before they travel should allow governments to completely end the practice.

The commercial aircraft leasing market appears headed for considerable turmoil in 2021 as lessors prepare for the return of more than 1,000 aircraft without clear options for onward placement, according to aviation consultancy IBA. In a recent webinar, IBA outlined how before the start of the pandemic operators planned to return about 1,300 aircraft, including 200 widebodies, to their lessors in 2021.

CAE, which this summer introduced the Airside digital platform to provide career and training resources for pilots during the Covid-19 pandemic, said the site has attracted more than 10,000 visitors since it went live in June. CAE developed Airside after surveying more than 3,000 pilots in April, after the pandemic had shut down many areas of the globe. The training provider sought to create a pilot community and engage with its customers during the pandemic and has continued to add features to the platform.
