Sweden’s Saab JAS 39 Gripen Flies at Dubai Airshow 2017

Saab’s newest new-generation Gripen E took flight earlier this year, but the high-performance multi-role fighter is still available in the C/D version, which is flying at this year’s Dubai Airshow.

The advantage of the Gripen C/D models is that they offer strong competition against cheaper-to-acquire second-hand fighters such as Lockheed Martin F-16s and surplus Tranche 1 Eurofighter Typhoons.

To encourage buyers, Saab has begun manufacturing some long lead-time components so that it can meet an 18-month turnaround from contract signature to delivery.

Brazil has ordered 36 E/F models, and some of the other opportunities for Saab include Slovakia and Bulgaria, which need to replace Russian MiG-29s, and Botswana, which issue an RFP last December for a replacement for its aging Northrop F-5s.

The Mach 2 capable Gripen C/D is powered by a Volvo RM12 delivering 12,100 pounds of thrust or 18,100 pounds with afterburner.
