Emirates SkyCargo on Wednesday suspended operations at Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central and consolidated all its cargo handling operations at Dubai International Airport in an effort to “streamline” operations between its freighter flights and new dedicated cargo flights using Emirates Airline's passenger fleet.

A new flight schedule for Emirates’ global cargo operations now includes cargo flights operated with its Boeing 777 passenger aircraft. Those flights will supplement dedicated freighters with about 40 tonnes of lower deck cargo capacity per flight.

The FAA is advising operators to remain vigilant about checking Notams and understanding the airport environment as the Covid-19 crisis is spurring carriers to park up to half of their fleets and airport operators search for space to accommodate this overflow. “Extensive overflow parking presents an extraordinarily unusual operational environment,” the agency said in a Safety Alert to Operators (SAFO 20005).

The International Air Transport Association on Tuesday warned that the airline industry’s liquidity crisis due to the Covid-19 outbreak will see half of all carriers running out of cash within two to three months without intervention from governments. Speaking during a conference call with journalists, IATA chief economist Brian Pearce and director general Alexandre de Juniac called on governments to allow airlines to provide vouchers for canceled flights rather than direct refunds as a way to help mitigate the problem.

Airbus-backed helicopter charter service Voom ceased operations on March 30. Confirming the decision in a blog post, Voom CEO Clément Monnet said Airbus decided not to resume services that had been suspended on March 23 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Voom launched its on-demand, per-seat booking service in 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil, and later expanded it to Mexico City and the San Francisco area. The company used a network of operators to provide the flights, which could be booked via an app or online up to an hour before departure.

The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) has issued guidance for FBOs and ground handlers as they face the growing Covid-19 spread. Above all, the organization noted, workers who are sick or have been exposed to the virus must not report to work, an expectation that management must effectively communicate to its employees on a continuous basis.
