Major Boeing suppliers Hexcel and Woodward have called off their planned merger amid deteriorating market conditions caused by the spread of the Covid-19 virus, the companies announced Monday. The companies announced on January 12 an agreement to combine in an all-stock transaction. However, the pandemic has resulted in a need for each company to concentrate on its respective businesses and has affected their ability to realize the benefits of the merger, they said in a joint statement.

Training specialist CAE is expanding its temporary layoffs to 2,600 workers and taking other measures to shore up its financial position as the Covid-19 crisis continues. The temporary layoffs announced on Monday followed initial layoff notices that went out last month to 465 employees.

CAE has jumped into the fight against Covid-19, preparing to begin production of ventilators and launching complimentary training seminars for healthcare personnel. The Canadian training specialist said its healthcare engineers and scientists designed a “simple, maintainable, easy-to-manufacture” ventilator prototype in just 11 days. That prototype is undergoing approval by Health Canada and CAE is sourcing components to begin production in the meantime.

Boeing has extended the temporary suspension of production activities at its Puget Sound area and Moses Lake sites until further notice, the company announced Sunday. The decision stems from the company’s own assessment of the spread of Covid-19 in Washington state and further recommendations from government health authorities, as well as considerations centered on the reliability of its supply chain.

On April 2, the U.S. Air Force and Boeing reached agreement on two key aspects currently affecting the KC-46A Pegasus tanker program. The first agrees on a revised design for the troublesome remote vision system (RVS), while the second provides assistance to the manufacturer in mitigating the effects of Covid-19. According to a press release from the Secretary of the Air Force’s office, the two Memoranda of Agreement will be incorporated into the main KC-46A contract.

Dassault Aircraft Services at New Castle Airport (ILG) in Wilmington, Delaware, is pausing its operations immediately after an employee tested positive for Covid-19, the company announced on Friday. “The decision is to help ensure the continued safety and health of our employees and customers,” it said.

Some staff will be furloughed until the facility can resume normal operations, which as of now is expected on April 20. The facility will continue to have some staffing to ensure basic FBO, administrative, and security functions.
