An Embraer Legacy 600 operated by UK-based charter provider Flairjet—a subsidiary of Flexjet Ltd.—was impounded this week and its crew arrested and placed in quarantine after allegedly violating NIgeria’s Covid-19 travel restrictions. According to reports, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority is investigating whether the aircraft, registered as G-ERFX, was engaged in commercial operations despite airspace closure in the country due to the pandemic.

Rolls-Royce on Wednesday confirmed plans to eliminate 9,000 jobs from its global workforce of 52,000 people in direct response to the collapse in demand for civil aircraft triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. The aircraft engine maker indicated that the bulk of the cuts will likely be made on the civil aerospace side of its business and mainly in the UK, where much of this activity is concentrated.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Tuesday revealed details of its proposed temporary layered approach to biosecurity for restarting passenger flights amid the Covid-19 crisis. IATA has published a so-called roadmap outlining biosecurity protocols such as passenger temperature screening as a more effective alternative to draconian measures such as Spain’s requirement that incoming travelers submit to a 14-day quarantine.

The U.S. congressional delegation from Kansas last week appealed to House and Senate leaders to provide the general aviation community temporary relief from aviation fuel taxes. Congress previously suspended aviation excise taxes, including both the ticket and fuel taxes, for commercial aviation through the end of the year under the CARES Act, but fuel taxes remained in place for private aviation.

The Covid-19 crisis is exacerbating the shortage of new aviation maintenance technicians, according to Crystal McGuire, executive director of the Aviation Technician Education Council (ATEC). During a Helicopter Association International (HAI) webinar on May 14, McGuire warned that of the 181 FAA-certified Part 147 aviation maintenance technician schools, half expected graduations to decrease in 2020 by 25 percent and fully 60 percent said enrollment would drop by 28 percent.
