The International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Wednesday issued an upbeat assessment of statistics that show an increase of flight totals of 30 percent from a low point on April 21 to May 27. The uptick followed a 94-percent plunge in revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) during April compared with the same month a year earlier, as Covid-19-related travel restrictions virtually shut down domestic and international air travel.

The UK government is pressing ahead with requirements for all travelers arriving in the country to be quarantined for 14 days. Ignoring demands from business groups to delay, amend, or abandon the rules, Home Secretary Priti Patel on Wednesday confirmed in a statement to the country’s parliament that the quarantine requirements will be enforced from June 8.

Europe’s airlines are gradually resuming passenger operations as governments begin to relax lockdowns and travel restrictions, and Eurocontrol expects that more than 8,000 flights a day will operate across the European network in the second half of June. That would mark a quadrupling on the “rock bottom” of April 12, when just 2,099 flights operated across the network. The region’s air navigation service providers handled 5,090 flights on June 1. Commercial flight activity has started to show “some positive movement upwards,” asserted Eurocontrol director-general Eamonn Brennan.

In March, the FAA initially granted petitions for exemptions to provide Part 135 flexibility in meeting protective breathing equipment requirements during training, as well as to provide more time to meet the crew recurrent training requirements.

Launched in its current form 10 years ago in collaboration with resource and mining support companies, BARS establishes a consensus-based industry standard and provides for auditing, risk assessment, data collection, and information sharing among participants.
