United Airlines will furlough 16,370 employees starting on October 1 upon the expiration of the Payroll Support Program the U.S. government instituted as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the airline said on Wednesday.

United Airlines on Thursday became the latest of the three big U.S. major carriers to signal a need for furloughs if the government doesn’t soon extend further Covid relief for the nation’s airlines. The plan calls for a furlough of 2,850 pilots, the first 1,747 to occur on October 1, the next 572 on October 30, and another 531 on November 30.

The announcement comes less than a week after Delta Air Lines said it would furlough 1,941 pilots on October 1 and American Airlines some 1,600 more on the same day.

Rolls-Royce is considering shedding its ITP Aero unit as that Spanish engine components manufacturer drains cash flow under many of the same Covid-19 related pressures its parent company continues to experience. The UK engine giant on Thursday reported that its net debt at the end of this year’s first half stood at £1.7 billion ($2.24 billion), compared with a net positive cash position at the end of last year of £1.4 billion.

American Airlines plans to lay off some 19,000 employees starting on October 1 if the U.S. government does not extend an aid package to U.S. airlines to further stem the financial effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. In a memo from airline CEO Doug Parker and president Robert Isom, employees received word that the job cuts could result in the loss of at least 40,000 positions, cutting by a third the 140,000-strong workforce American employed before the Covid crisis took hold in the U.S.

Medical services provider Medaire has partnered with a third-party company to offer Covid-19 testing and tracking to flight crews, company personnel, and passengers. The FDA-authorized saliva collection test is as effective as nasal swab tests, according to Medaire, and can be self-administered with supervision via a Zoom video call.
