Italy’s Argos Looks to Build FBO Chain Across Europe

Argos VIP is set to build a network of European FBOs with plans to expand beyond its native Italy. The Rome-based group recently opened its first operation outside the country with a base in Lugano, Switzerland, and has its sights set on further expansion in France and possibly Spain.

According to commercial director Barbara Ciolli, Argos had targeted the UK for its expansion project, but put this decision on hold following the country’s June 23 vote to leave the European Union. “We have looked at Nice [in the south of France], but that is very crowded and so Cannes is now an option as traffic has increased there; and we’re still considering other options,” she told AIN.

Here at the MEBAA show, Argos (Stand 328) is looking to connect with its established customer base of Middle Eastern operators, with the aim of consolidating the position it claims as Italy’s leading chain of FBOs. In addition to its main facility at Rome’s Ciampino Airport, the company also has bases at Milan’s Malpensa and Linate airports, as well as in Venice, Verona, Pisa, Naples and Cagliari.

According to Ciolli, access for business aviation at Italian airports has improved in recent years, with the country largely shedding its reputation for restrictive handling practices. “It is easier now at the bigger airports, and they are more open to private aviation,” she stated. “Argos was the first to break down this wall but we are still trying to break the monopolies in places like Florence. We are a full partner to operators at all destinations and know how to deal with the Italian regulations.”

Traffic volumes handled by Argos have continued to increase during 2016 following a strong year in 2015. Ciolli said the growth rates have almost been maintained this year, despite the generally negative impact on European business aviation of factors such as passenger concerns over the wave of terrorist attacks that have hit France, Germany and other countries.
